The McDonald's at 6830 Balboa Blvd in Van Nuys, CA has to be the most run-down and filthy McDonald's we have seen to date. We visited the restaurant in the afternoon. Our first stop was the play area for children. We entered through the glass door which looked like no one had cleaned it in months. There was food and greasy handprints all over the glass. The windows looked like they had not been cleaned in some time.

As soon as we entered the play yard, we looked for a clean table to sit down at so our three year old son could eat his Happy Meal. No such luck.

All of the tables that were available , were slimy with spilled soft drinks, ketchup, leftover food and other people's food wrappers, trays and utensils.

We went to the manager at the front counter and explained about the dirty tables. We got a half hearted response almost from under her breath. She said that she would send someone out to clean up the area. True to her word, a woman showed up looking very tired and probably wishing she were somewhere else. She swept a couple of things up, mopped for less than a minute, walked around looking like she had stared at the sun for too long and then left the area. She never even attempted to clean the table tops. She just left them a mess. There was also chewing gum stuck to the floor in several places.

The kids play area is run down and in need of new rubber flooring. The paint is very old, fading and peeling. The table tops are permanently stained. The overall condition of the restaurant is dingy and streaked with water and dirt stains. Tiles are broken and dislodged from the roof structure and are subject to falling off. The entire restaurant needs to be rebuilt and brought back to the original McDonald's specifications.

We talked to several mothers about the conditions of the tables both inside the restaurant as well as the play area. They told us that the condition today was not that bad compared to most days. They said that they had seen, on numerous occasions, the entire play area covered in half eaten kids food and spilled drinks. They went on to say that the dining room wasn't much better.

A middle aged grandmother with two children in tow, one four and the other five years old, was chain smoking right in the middle of the kids play area. We discreetly asked the manager to request that she not smoke in the play area. The manager agreed and said that she would handle the problem.

She never came out to the play area and never approached the woman at all. The woman just kept right on chain smoking. Needless to say, smoking in a restaurant is illegal in California. Smoking around toddlers and pre-schoolers is inexcusable and selfish

The real question is if it is this dirty on the outside, what's going on the inside where your food is stored, prepared, cooked and served. This is definitely one McDonald's we will be Watching. We will keep you informed on what the restaurant does or does not do to correct these problems.
